Description

Mercury-Redstone was a Redstone missile adapted to carry a Mercury capsule on a short up-and-down flight. On 5 May 1961 it launched Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7 on a fifteen-minute flight, making him the first American in space; Gus Grissom followed on Liberty Bell 7 that July. Before either of them, it flew Ham the chimpanzee. Originally illustrated for a commission for the California Science Center’s Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
