Atlas III, a short-lived Atlas from 2000 to 2005 and the first American rocket to fly with a Russian-built engine, the RD-180.
Atlas III flew only six times, all of them successful, but it changed the Atlas line for good. It dropped the old design, where booster engines fell away partway up, for a single Russian RD-180 engine, the same engine that went on to power every Atlas V.
The RD-180 descends from the Soviet RD-170, and depending on a Russian engine later became a political problem for American launches; it’s one reason the Atlas line was eventually replaced by Vulcan, built around American engines.
