Atlas II, the last of the Atlas rockets to drop its booster engines partway up, flown 63 times without a failure.
Atlas II was the last version of the Atlas to keep the design it started with as a missile in the 1950s: three engines at liftoff, two of them dropped partway up in one booster section, leaving the middle engine to finish the climb. It launched communications satellites and military payloads through the 1990s, and every one of its 63 flights succeeded.
