Black Arrow, still the only British rocket to put a satellite into orbit, launching Prospero from Australia in 1971.
Black Arrow launched the Prospero satellite from Woomera, Australia, on 28 October 1971, after the government had already cancelled the program. It’s still the only time a British-built rocket has put a satellite into orbit, and Prospero is still up there.
Britain remains the only country to have developed its own satellite launcher and then given it up.
