Diamant, the rocket that made France the third country to launch its own satellite, after the Soviet Union and the United States.
On 26 November 1965, Diamant launched France’s first satellite, Astérix, from Hammaguir in the Algerian Sahara. That made France the third country to put a satellite into orbit on its own rocket. Later Diamants flew from Kourou, the French Guiana site Europe still launches from.
Astérix was named after the comic-book Gaul.
