H-I, the Japanese rocket that paired a licence-built American first stage with Japan’s own hydrogen-fuelled upper stage.
H-I’s first stage was built in Japan under licence from the American Thor-Delta, but its second stage carried the LE-5, Japan’s first liquid hydrogen engine. It flew nine times between 1986 and 1992 without a failure, and that experience led to the all-Japanese H-II.
