N1, the Soviet Union’s answer to the Saturn V, whose four launches all failed before its Moon program was quietly cancelled.
N1 was built to land a Soviet cosmonaut on the Moon. Its first stage had thirty engines firing together, more than any rocket until Starship, and keeping them all in step proved too hard: all four launches between 1969 and 1972 failed, one of them falling back onto its pad at Baikonur. The program was cancelled in 1974, and the Soviet Union didn’t admit it had existed until 1989.
