The Sputnik rocket, the modified R-7 missile that put Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, into orbit on 4 October 1957.
The rocket that launched Sputnik was a lightened version of the R-7, the world’s first intercontinental missile, with its warhead replaced by a satellite. On 4 October 1957 it put Sputnik 1 into orbit, and a month later it launched Sputnik 2 with Laika, the first animal to orbit the Earth. The R-7’s design is still flying today as the Soyuz. One of eighteen rockets illustrated for the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center.
