The V-2, the German wartime missile that became the first human-made object to reach space.
The V-2 was built in Nazi Germany as a weapon, much of it by forced labourers in underground factories, and thousands were fired at London, Antwerp and other cities. In June 1944, a test launch climbed past 100 kilometres, the first human-made object to reach space.
After the war, captured V-2s and the engineers who built them became the starting point for both the American and the Soviet space programs.
