Vanguard, the rocket whose first launch exploded on live television in 1957, and whose satellite Vanguard 1 is still in orbit today.
On 6 December 1957, two months after Sputnik, Vanguard’s first full launch attempt rose barely a metre off the pad at Cape Canaveral and exploded on live television. Newspapers called it Flopnik. In March 1958 it succeeded, launching Vanguard 1, a grapefruit-sized satellite that’s still in orbit, the oldest human-made object up there.
