Vostok, the rocket that launched Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961, the first human in space, and Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman.
Vostok was an R-7 with an extra upper stage, strong enough to put a capsule with a person in it into orbit. On 12 April 1961 it launched Yuri Gagarin on one orbit of the Earth, the first human spaceflight, and in June 1963 it launched Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
Gagarin’s flight lasted 108 minutes, and he came down by parachute after ejecting from the capsule, a detail kept quiet for years.
