GSLV Mk I, India’s first rocket built for geostationary transfer orbit, flown with a Russian-built cryogenic upper stage.
The first GSLV was built so India could launch its own communications satellites rather than buy launches abroad. Its lower stages came from the PSLV family, with four liquid strap-on boosters, but its cryogenic upper stage was bought from Russia. India’s own replacement for that stage flew on the later Mk II.
