Description

Atlas LV-3B was the Mercury-Atlas, the Atlas missile adapted to carry a Mercury capsule into orbit. On 20 February 1962 it launched John Glenn aboard Friendship 7 for three orbits, and it flew the three Mercury missions that followed.

Glenn’s flight came ten months after Yuri Gagarin’s, and a warning that his heat shield might have come loose made its last minutes some of the tensest of the Mercury program. Part of a set of eighteen rocket illustrations commissioned for the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center at the California Science Center.
