Electron, Rocket Lab’s small satellite launcher, built and flown from New Zealand since 2017.
Electron is Rocket Lab’s small rocket, built for satellites that would otherwise wait for spare room on a bigger launch. It flies from the company’s own site on the Mahia Peninsula on New Zealand’s North Island, and its Rutherford engines were the first orbital rocket engines to use battery-powered electric pumps.
Rocket Lab has since brought several first stages back under parachutes and recovered them from the sea, working toward flying them again. Originally illustrated for a commission for the California Science Center’s Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
