Ariane 4, the European rocket that launched around half of the world’s commercial satellites through the 1990s.
Ariane 4 flew 116 times, and for much of the 1990s it launched around half of the world’s commercial communications satellites. It came in six versions, with different combinations of liquid and solid boosters around its core, so a customer paid for only as much rocket as their satellite needed.
By its last flight in 2003 it had succeeded 113 times in 116 tries, and Arianespace had become the leading commercial launch company of the decade.
