Ariane 5, Europe’s heavy-lift rocket for nearly three decades and the one that launched the James Webb Space Telescope.
Ariane 5 was Europe’s heavy-lift rocket from 1996 to 2023, usually carrying two big communications satellites at once. Its best-known flight was on Christmas Day 2021, when it launched the James Webb Space Telescope so precisely that the telescope was left with fuel for many extra years of work.
Its first flight, in 1996, ended about forty seconds after liftoff, when software carried over from Ariane 4 sent it off course: one of the best-known software failures in engineering. It went on to fly more than a hundred successful missions, including ESA’s Rosetta comet probe in 2004.
