Atlas E/F, retired Atlas missiles refitted as launchers, which put up weather satellites and the first GPS satellites.
When the Atlas E and F missiles were retired in the 1960s, the Air Force refitted them to launch satellites instead. They launched the first Navstar GPS satellites from 1978, along with weather satellites for NOAA and the military.
The Atlas began in the 1950s as America’s first intercontinental missile, built with steel skin so thin the tanks had to stay pressurized to hold their own shape.
