RSA-3, the rocket South Africa built to launch its own satellites, cancelled in the early 1990s before it ever flew to orbit.
Developed in the late 1980s, RSA-3 was South Africa’s attempt to build a satellite launch vehicle. The rocket was tested from the Overberg range in 1989 and 1990, but the program ended before RSA-3 ever reached orbit.
A lesser-known chapter in the history of spaceflight, RSA-3 reflects the spread of launch vehicle development beyond the major space powers during the final years of the Cold War.
