Juno II, the rocket that launched Pioneer 4, the first American spacecraft to escape Earth’s gravity, in 1959.
Juno II was built on a Jupiter missile with the same small solid-rocket upper stages as the Juno I. It launched Pioneer 3 and Pioneer 4 toward the Moon, and in March 1959 Pioneer 4 became the first American probe to escape Earth’s gravity. It also launched the Explorer 7 satellite.
More than half of its ten flights failed, which wasn’t unusual at the time.
