Pegasus, the winged rocket that’s dropped from under a carrier aircraft and lights its engine in mid-air, flying since 1990.
Pegasus doesn’t use a launch pad. It’s carried up under a converted airliner, a Lockheed L-1011 called Stargazer, and dropped at about 12,000 metres; after five seconds of free fall its first stage lights, and the small wing on that stage helps turn the fall into a climb to orbit.
It was the first privately developed rocket to reach orbit, in 1990.
