Proton, the Soviet and Russian heavy-lift rocket that launched the Salyut and Mir stations and the first modules of the ISS.
Proton has been flying since 1965, first for the Soviet Union and then for Russia. It launched the Salyut space stations, most of the modules of Mir, and Zarya and Zvezda, the first Russian modules of the International Space Station. Through the 1990s and 2000s it was also one of the world’s main commercial launchers.
It burns fuels that ignite on contact, which made it simple and dependable but toxic, and it’s being replaced by Angara.
